Anya Angelova Pencheva is a Bulgarian theatre and film actress, born on September 12, 1957 in the city of Smolyan. She graduated in acting from the VITIZ „Krastyo Sarafov“ in 1980 in the class of Prof. Sasho Stoyanov. Even as a student, she stood out with her stage presence and charisma, and during her fourth year she was accepted into the company of the Youth Theatre in Sofia — the place where her professional development began.

 

In 1987 Anya Pencheva joined the company of the National Theatre „Ivan Vazov“, where she performed for decades. There she played numerous significant roles in classical and contemporary plays. Among the productions she has appeared in are „Antigone“, „The Iron Candlestick“, „Madam Minister“, „A Cry for Love“, „Love Letters“ and others. She has worked under the direction of some of the most established Bulgarian theatre figures and has built a repertoire that combines classical dramaturgy with modern stage explorations.

 

Besides theatre, Anya Pencheva has an impressive career in Bulgarian cinema and television. She made her debut as early as 1977 in the film „Boris I“. Later she appeared in numerous emblematic films such as „322“, „Measure According to Measure“, „Eva on the Third Floor“, „Patriarchy“, „House No. 8“, „Damascena“, as well as in popular television series such as „Hotel Bulgaria“, „Seven Hours Difference“, „The Path of Honor“. Thus she has become one of the most recognizable faces on the Bulgarian screen.

 

Her acting mastery has also been recognised with prestigious awards. In 2002 she received the „Askeer“ for Supporting Actress for her performance in the production „Eating with Friends“. This accolade underscores the high regard of theatre critics and her place among the leading actresses on the Bulgarian stage.

Over the years, Anya Pencheva has often been sought after not only for dramatic but also for comedic roles. Her stage presence combines charisma, intelligent humour and the ability to create vivid and memorable characters.

 

One of Anya Pencheva’s latest projects is the production „Code Yellow“, a production of Artvent and „Baza X“. The production is based on a text by Teodora Markova, directed by Yana Titova and with set design by Ognyana Serafimova. In addition to Pencheva, the cast includes Vesela Babinova, Anelia Lutsinova and Ekaterina Lazarevska.

„Code Yellow“ is a comedy that focuses on the lives of four women brought together at a moment of crisis. The plot explores themes such as female solidarity, social stereotypes and everyday compromises, interwoven with much irony and laughter. Anya Pencheva plays a role that combines humour and dramatic elements, demonstrating her acting range and ability to hold the audience’s attention. The premiere of the production was met with interest and positive reviews, and Pencheva’s participation is among the main highlights of the performance.
