Daniel Svetozarov Kukushev is a young Bulgarian actor, born on 19 July 2000 in Sofia. From an early age he experimented and took part in theatrical activities, which led him to NATFIZ „Krastyo Sarafov“. There he studied acting for dramatic theatre in the class of Prof. Dr. Penko Gospodinov and graduated in 2024 with excellent references. His training included a variety of productions — from classical to contemporary — among them graduation productions such as „27 Wagons Full of Cotton“, „The Canterbury Tales“, „I Feel Like Killing“, „Don Juan Returns from the War“ and „Casting“ (musical). These appearances gave him a broad foundation for stage work and experience in different styles and genres.

 

While still a student, Kukushev began his professional stage career. His debut role is Rosen Spasov in „Piano on the Moon“ at Theatre „Atelie313“ — a production based on motifs by Valeri Petrov, which allowed him to show talent and presence before an audience. He was also nominated for the „Askeer“ award in 2023 in the „Rising Star“ category, for his role as „The Youth“ in the production „The Promise“ by Gergan Tsenov. This nomination is a sign that the acting community has noticed him, and that he can be part of the future of contemporary Bulgarian theatre.

Among the productions he has taken part in are „Brain Trash“ (an experimental project), „And Yet Life Is Beautiful“ (a production of „Théatro otsam kanala“) and „The Marvelous Adventures of Pinocchio“ — roles that demonstrate variety: from children’s and fantastical texts to serious dramatic tasks.

 

In 2024, Daniel Kukushev joins the ensemble of the production „Do You Swear on the Children?“, a Theatre Artvent production, based on a play by Salomé Lelouch. The production is directed by Kris Sharkov, translated by Snezhina Zdravkova, with music by Emiliyan Gatsov – Elbi and set design by Vanina Tsandeva. In „Do You Swear on the Children?“ Kukushev performs together with Vesela Babinova, Vladimir Zombori and Lidia Vasileva. The performance raises questions about morality, promises and compromises, and is performed on several stages around the country — Sofia, Ruse, Burgas, Varna and others. This participation contributes significantly to his growth on stage and his visibility to a wider audience.

 

As a young actor, Daniel Kukushev combines dramatic sensitivity with lively humor and an ability to sense the rhythm of conversation with the audience — qualities that help him enter theatre ensembles with confidence and to seek roles that require not only voice and presence, but also a solid dramatic impulse. 

 

Kukushev is already part of a small but significant circle of young artists who manage to balance training, stage practice, experimental formats and more mainstream productions. With his participation in „Do You Swear on the Children?“ he demonstrates that he can be not only a performer, but also empathetic to themes that touch the audience — morality, relationships, personal promises and their consequences.
