Maria Angelova Sapundzhieva was born on June 6, 1969, in Varna. In 1992, she graduated from NATFIZ „Krastyo Sarafov“, in the class of Prof. Atanas Ilkov.

Theatrical career:

After graduating in 1992, Sapundzhieva was part of the companies of the First Private Theatre „La Strada“ and the Little City Theatre „Behind the Canal“ until around 2000. In 2000, she joined the company of the National Theatre „Ivan Vazov“, where she has performed in numerous productions.

  • „The Great Magic“ by Eduardo De Filippo.
  • „Tanya, Tanya“ by Olya Mukhina.

  • At the National Theatre – „Decameron or Blood and Passion after Boccaccio“ by Alexander Morfov.
  • „Ghosts in Naples“ by Eduardo De Filippo.
  • „Santa Claus Is a Scumbag“ and „Enchanting Night“ by Josiane Balasko.
  • „Jake’s Women“ by Neil Simon.
  • „A Month in the Country“ by Ivan Turgenev.
  • The Country Wife“ by William Wycherley.
  • „The House of Bernarda Alba“ by Federico García Lorca.
  • „John Gabriel Borkman“ by Henrik Ibsen.
  • „Ivanov“ by Anton Chekhov.

 

At Theatre 199 „Valentin Stoichev“ she took part in productions such as „Evening Act“ (after Chekhov) and „Veresii“ with partner Toncho Tokmakchiev.

Television and film:

Maria Sapundzhieva is also popular beyond the stage, with appearances in television shows and series. One of her well-known appearances is in the comedy show „Club UFO“. In 2010, she appeared in the comedy series „Total Madness“, in the role of Mama Bozhka – the eagle-mother of the character Zhoro Beckham. 
In film and television, her filmography includes film and TV productions such as „Patriarchy“ and „Hourglass“.

Awards and recognitions:

Maria Sapundzhieva is the recipient of several prestigious theatre awards:

  • In 1997, she received the award of the Union of Artists in Bulgaria for her role in „Tanya, Tanya“.
  • In 2001, she won an Askeer for Best Supporting Actress in the production „Decameron or Blood and Passion after Boccaccio“.
  • In 2010, she received the „Icarus“ award for Leading Actress for the production „Molly Sweeney“ by Brian Friel, directed by Borislav Chakrinov.
  • In 2023, she won the „Golden Kukerikon“ award for the leading female role of Mary in the production „Jealousy“ by the theatre company „Viva Arte“.

 

Educational and teaching activity:

Since 2008, Maria Sapundzhieva has been a freelance actress. Besides her stage work, she also teaches acting. One of her roles is as artistic director of the Youth Acting School at the acting schools MONTFIZ – Sofia.
