Info - Maria Sapundzhieva:

Maria Angelova Sapundjieva was born on June 6, 1969 in Varna. In 1992, she graduated from the National Academy of Dramatic Arts and Sciences "Krustyo Sarafov", in the class of Prof. Atanas Ilkov.

Theatrical career:

After graduating in 1992, Sapundjieva was part of the troupes of the First Private Theater "La Strada" and the Small City Theater "Zad Kanala" in the period until around 2000. In 2000, she joined the troupe of the Ivan Vazov National Theater, where she performed in numerous productions.

Some of Sapundzhieva's more significant theatrical roles include:

  • "The Tragedy of Urbules" by Dušan Kovačević.
  • "The Great Magic" by Eduardo de Filippo.
  • "Tanya, Tanya" by Olya Mukhina.
  • "The Robbers" by Friedrich Schiller.
  • "Romeo and Juliet" by William Shakespeare.
  • At the National Theater - "Decameron or Blood and Passion according to Boccaccio" by Alexander Morfov.
  • "Ghosts in Naples" by Eduardo de Filippo.
  • "Santa Claus is Trash" and "Enchanted Night" by Josian Balasko.
  • "Jake's Women" by Neil Simon.
  • "A Month in the Country" by Ivan Turgenev.
  • "To Take a Country Wife" by William Wycherley.
  • "The House of Bernarda Alba" by Federico Garcia Lorca.
  • "Jun Gabriel Borkman" by Henrik Ibsen.
  • "Ivanov" by Anton Chekhov.

 

At Theater 199, "Valentin Stoychev" participated in productions such as "Evening Act" (based on Chekhov) and "Veresii" with partner Toncho Tokmakchiev.

Television and cinema:

Maria Sapundzhieva is also popular outside the theater scene, with appearances in television shows and series. One of her famous appearances is in the comedy show "Club UFO". In 2010, she starred in the comedy series "Full Madhouse", in the role of Mama Bozhka - the eagle mother of the character Joro Beckham. 
In cinema and television, her filmography includes film and TV productions such as "Patriarchy" and "Hourglass".

Awards and recognitions:

Maria Sapundzhieva is the winner of several prestigious theater awards:

  • In 1997, she received the award of the Union of Artists in Bulgaria for her role in "Tanya, Tanya".
  • In 2001, she won the Asker for a supporting female role in the production of "Decameron or Blood and Passion according to Boccaccio".
  • In 2010, she received the "Icarus" award for the leading female role for the performance "Molly Sweeney" by Brian Friel, director Borislav Chakrinov.
  • In 2023, she won the Golden Kukericon award for the leading female role of Mary in the play "Jealousy" at the Viva Arte Theater House.

 

Educational and pedagogical activities:

Since 2008, Maria Sapundzhieva has been a freelance actress. In addition to the stage, she also teaches acting. One of her roles is artistic director of the Youth Acting School at the MONTFIZ Acting Schools - Sofia.
