„State of Emergency“ – a comedy about life when the world stopped

There are moments in history that leave a lasting mark on all of us. The period of quarantine was such a time – a time when everyday life shrank to the walls of the home, and the most ordinary things took on new meaning. These very experiences come to life on stage in the stand-up show „State of Emergency“ – a comedy created from real stories, told with plenty of self-deprecation and genuine humor.

The original script is by Здрава Каменова, Богдана Трифонова and Светослав Томов – a team that knows how to turn difficult situations into entertaining stories. Here you will hear stories about the lockdowns, about the lack of social life, about people in uniform and people without masks, about online learning that turned every home into a classroom, and about the endless worries – from work and money to the hairdresser and the space that is never enough.

On stage, these stories come to life through the incredible comic talent of Стефания Колева, Здрава Каменова and Богдана Трифонова. They turn their personal experiences of life within 60 square meters – together with husbands, children, and pets – into a hysterically funny show. Unafraid to call things by their real names, the actresses paint a picture in which every audience member will recognize familiar scenes from their own everyday life.

„State of Emergency“ is not just theater about the pandemic – it is theater about human resilience and our ability to cope through laughter. While the world was afraid and waiting for news, these stories show how life goes on, albeit in a new form. The laughter here is not just entertainment, but a lifeline that helps us get through the toughest days.

This is a show that speaks to all generations. Parents will recognize themselves in the chaos of remote learning. Young people will remember the first weeks of the lockdown with a smile and a bit of nostalgia. And together we will all realize that even in the most limited conditions a person can find a reason to laugh.

„State of Emergency“ is a comedy about the time when we were together more than ever – and when we discovered that laughter is the best form of freedom.

The show that began as a living‑room conversation during the first lockdown quickly grew into a touring hit for Artvent Theatre. Since its debut run, the trio have taken it across Bulgaria — from City Mark Art Center in Sofia to summer stages in Plovdiv, Pleven, Ruse and along the coast — meeting audiences who remember those months all too well, and are ready to laugh about them now.

Who’s on stage and why it matters

  • Stefania Koleva brings razor‑sharp timing honed in theatre, film and television; she earned a nomination at the Monte‑Carlo Television Festival in 2010 for a comedy series role and is beloved for her elastic physical comedy.
  • Zdrava Kamenova is not only an actress but also an awarded playwright — among her distinctions is the Brücke Berlin Prize for writing — which shows in the show’s keen ear for everyday speech and social detail.
  • Bogdana Trifonova, a familiar voice from BG Radio’s morning program “Starter”, adds the quick wit of a broadcaster who knows how to read a room and land a story at just the right moment.

Izvanredno polozhenie is performed as stand‑up theatre: three women, minimal props, maximum energy. Expect fast‑switching monologues and sketch‑like bits rather than traditional scenes; on some early outings they even walked on in pajamas — a playful nod to the “home office” months. The format runs close to two hours and thrives on the performers’ interplay as they volley observations, one‑liners and confessions back and forth.

The success of this title sparked a whole “Izvanredno” cycle with follow‑ups that explored new angles — from matters of the heart to gloriously awkward situations — and even a one‑night large‑scale special that filled Hall 1 of the National Palace of Culture by remixing favorite material from the first shows. If you’re catching the original chapter for the first time, you’re seeing where that wave began.

New to contemporary Bulgarian comedy on stage? Pair this night out with other audience favorites from our programme, such as the relationship satire Otchayani sapruzi 2: Brakuvani, the Friday‑night confessional vibe of Petak vecher, the office‑era caper Bez garanciya, or the mischievous farce Idiotyt zvyni vinagi tri pyti.

Good to know: the show’s language is contemporary and candid; humor leans observational rather than slapstick. If you enjoy intimate, story‑driven comedy delivered by performers with serious craft, this is for you.
