The Gift
The Gift
How much does it take for a person to lose their balance? Sometimes just one absurd joke.
One gift, a few people, and a situation that could end in minutes if everyone weren't so determined to complicate it.
„The Gift“ is a comedy about our astonishing talent for turning minor inconveniences into grand disasters. About the decisions we make to try to fix the situation while actually making it increasingly hopeless.
Because sometimes the biggest problem is that we can't leave things alone.
Director's note by Vasil Duyov-Taig:
„The Gift“ is a comedy about the fragility of the modern person, capable of turning an absurd mockery into a turning point in their life.
We have accepted as normal to be bombarded with news, to become victims of misinformation, to be filled with fear from the screens. At the same time, every day we receive advice on how to eat, how many hours to sleep, how to breathe, and all sorts of guidelines on who we should be and how exactly we should live this life.
Career successes, the ambition for perfection, and the accumulation of knowledge seem to increasingly distance us from the simplest things necessary to achieve balance. And the thirst for heroism, tragicomedy, and hyper-eventfulness makes us turn even the smallest obstacles on our path into fateful trials.
„The Gift“ is a spectacle about our downfalls and ascensions, about the absurd situations we get ourselves into, and about our desperate attempts to maintain balance.
A comedy where it is easy to laugh at someone else's absurdity. At least until we recognize our own.“

A sharp new Bulgarian staging of a buzzy contemporary comedy arrives with a mischievous premise and clockwork timing. Written by British playwright Dave Florez, whose three-hander “The Gift” premiered in London’s Park Theatre in January 2025, the play spins a seemingly trivial incident into a hilariously escalating investigation of ego, pride and the stories we tell ourselves when panic takes the wheel.
Vasil Duyov‑Taig brings a kinetic, actor-forward approach. His recent work ranges from the carnivalesque satire “Comedy of Corruption” at Theatre “Bulgarian Army” to the one-woman whirlwind “Pistol in a Tornado,” and he previously collaborated on an ensemble that earned an Askeer “Rising Star” distinction. Expect crisp rhythm, razor edits between scenes and an appetite for physical comedy that keeps the pace taut across the tight 90 minutes.
The cast comes with serious stage muscle. Yulian Vergov is a leading name at the Ivan Vazov National Theatre and a familiar face from hit TV series, while Dariya Simeonova has been a core member of Theatre Sofia’s company and is known from “Undercover,” “Stolen Life” and the film “Mother.” Plamen Dimov, also from the National Theatre, took home the Ikar award in 2026 for a commanding lead turn in “Glembay.” The trio’s chemistry is the engine here: a volley of suspicions, half-truths and improvised alibis delivered with split‑second precision.
The visual world is shaped by scenographer Daniela Nikolchova (Ikar nominee), whose projects span drama and opera; she favors bold, legible spaces that let actors and props do the talking. The original score by Namliev is understated but telling—little rhythmic nudges that tighten the screws under each new “explanation.”
Beyond the laughs, this staging leans into questions that feel very now: how rumor mutates in the age of constant alerts; why self‑help slogans don’t help when pride is bruised; and how quickly a private embarrassment can balloon into a full-blown crusade. You’ll recognize the impulse to “fix” everything instantly—and the comic wreckage that follows.
