"Base X" presents „Do you swear on the children?“
She is a psychotherapist, he is a lawyer. They are a couple as much in love as they are superstitious. One evening they swear that they will be faithful to each other for ten years, in the name of their children.
Time passes and the end of this „term of fidelity“ approaches. And with it comes the moment of truth - how hard is it to say „I swear“?
As they prepare to cross this long-awaited milestone and demonstrate a clear conscience, morals, and decency, doubt in both of them begins to show more and more. Bending morality in their own way, the couple enters a spiral of lies from which getting out is almost impossible.
The new play by Salome Lelouch „Do you swear on the children?“ takes us into situations that are as unsolvable as they are real. Because they are part of the reality of romantic relationships today. Starring Vesela Babinova and Vladimir Zombori, who are a couple offstage as well. The cast is completed by Lidia Vasileva and Daniel Kukushev. Director is Kris Sharkov, and set designer - Vanina Tsandeva.
After the success of „Don't say it!“ with Teodora Duhovnikova and Zahari Baharov this is the second play by the French author Salome Lelouch to appear on the Bulgarian theatrical stage. The comedy excites with its topicality and its spicy sense of humor. The text is lively, surprising, intelligent, and the actors compete in an endless duel of little secrets and big lies.

About the play and its French origin
Written by French dramatist and director Salomé Lelouch, the original version bears the title “Sur la tête des enfants.” It became a Paris hit at Théâtre de la Renaissance, running from January 24 to May 7, 2023, in a staging co-directed by Lelouch and Ludivine de Chastenet and led by stars Marie Gillain and Pascal Elbé. The premise turns a private promise into a ticking clock, then mines the fallout with lightness, speed and a very Parisian appetite for debate.

The Bulgarian staging
Base X brings the comedy to Bulgaria in a fresh production that premiered on February 6–7, 2024 at Kino “Lumière.” The text is in an agile Bulgarian translation by Snezina Rusinova‑Zdravkova, with music by Emiliyan Gatsov – Elbi, whose understated electronic textures sharpen the comic rhythm and the sudden moral pauses. Director Kris Sharkov keeps the action nimble and actor‑driven; his taste for precise tempo and clear narrative stakes is evident from the first exchange to the final volte‑face.

Why audiences respond
This is a comedy of mores that plays like a chess match. Every move has consequences; every white lie calls up a larger one. The quartet on stage spar with the courtroom logic of a lawyer one minute and the clinical self‑awareness of a therapist the next, then undercut both with very human impulses. Expect rapid‑fire dialogue, well‑timed reversals, and the kind of moments when the house goes quiet because the joke has suddenly turned into a question: how much weight does a promise really carry?

What you’ll notice in the room

  • Actor chemistry that leverages real‑life rapport into razor‑sharp timing.
  • Clean, modular scenography that lets the story pivot quickly between confession, temptation and damage control.
  • Music cues that glide from playful to needling, underlining how easily certainty slips.

For fans of sharp, relationship‑driven comedies
If you enjoy contemporary pieces where couples negotiate love, loyalty and temptation with wit rather than melodrama, this production sits comfortably alongside ticket.bg favorites such as Petak vecher and Otchayani sapruzi 2: Brakuvani. Rom‑com aficionados will also find echoes of film‑world banter in Lyubov po scenariy v HOLLYWOOD, though Lelouch’s writing keeps the stakes firmly anchored in the ethics of everyday speech: what we say, what we promise, and the grey zones in between.

A note on the team
Kris Sharkov’s recent work has ranged from chamber comedies to large‑scale literary adaptations, and here he opts for economy and precision—giving the performers the space to turn confession into competition. The result is a bright, slightly dangerous evening: you’ll laugh, then recognize yourself, then laugh again because recognition is the whole point.
