Premahni ot priyateli

What is the worst thing you can find out about an online friend who is coming to stay with you for a week? Peter (Vladimir Zombori) and Debbie Lindel (Anelia Lutsinova) - a normal, working family - will learn the answer to this question the hard way. Good British manners introduce them to the extravagant and lascivious widow Elza Jean Krakovski (Maria Sapundjieva). Their "friendship" begins on the deck of a cruise ship and continues on social media. Their relationship is smooth sailing (from a distance), until one day Elza invites herself to their home for a week… Too late, too irreversible, they learn a terrifying truth about her. They are in for a visit that will put them on the rollercoaster of horrors! But how can they refuse and protect everything they love from this danger without seeming a little rude?

Premahni ot priyateli brings to Bulgaria the hit British black comedy by Steven Moffat — the writer behind Sherlock and Doctor Who — in a pacey, high-wire staging that turns good manners into a minefield. The Bulgarian premiere took place on June 30, 2023 at “Theatro otsam kanala” in Sofia, and the show has been touring ever since, drawing audiences who relish quick-witted dialogue, razor timing and that delicious tingle of “should we really be laughing at this?”.

This local production is directed by Valentin Ganev, with a cast led by Maria Sapundjieva as the disarmingly unstoppable Elsa Jean Krakowski, alongside Vladimir Zombori and Anelia Lutsinova as a couple trying to keep calm while their living room quietly combusts. Deyan Angelov and Katya Ivanova complete the ensemble. The adaptation is translated by Nikolay Angelov, with scenography by Krasimir Valkanov and sound design by Slav Bistrev — a compact creative team that keeps the action light on its feet while letting the punchlines land hard. Produced by Artvent.

For context lovers: Moffat’s play premiered at Chichester’s Minerva Theatre on May 21, 2022, directed by Mark Gatiss in his stage directorial debut, then transferred to London’s Criterion Theatre from January to April 2023 and returned for a second West End run at Wyndham’s Theatre from December 16, 2023 to March 9, 2024. That pedigree shows in the writing — conversational, nimble, and quietly merciless — and in the clockwork structure that lets the smallest faux pas spiral into catastrophe.

Why audiences click with it

  • It skewers digital-age friendliness and “being nice” with humour that’s recognisably British yet lands perfectly with Bulgarian viewers.
  • The tone dances between farce and thriller; you’ll hear gasps and laughs in the same breath.
  • A compact cast means you’re always close to the characters’ split-second choices — and the consequences.

If sharp contemporary comedies are your thing, you’ll likely enjoy the same crackling energy found in titles like Petak vecher and the marital mischief of Otchayani sapruzi 2: Brakuvani. Fans of cleverly engineered plots may also gravitate to the social-satire edge of Idiotyt zvyni vinagi tri pyti.

Expect a brisk evening where etiquette collides with survival instincts, where every doorbell chime shifts the ground a little, and where Sapundjieva’s Elsa can steal a scene with a single, sunny smile. It’s wicked fun — and uncomfortably relatable.
